NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University nursing students had access to flu vaccinations on campus Monday, Oct. 5, as they prepare for clinical rotations that provide hands-on training in health care settings.

The clinic, held in Alost Hall, was open to all NSU students, faculty and staff. It was scheduled early in October to give students participating in clinical rotations an opportunity to receive their flu vaccinations before upcoming clinical experiences. Walgreens administered the vaccinations, with no out-of-pocket cost for those who received shots Monday.

Nursing students must complete a series of health and certification requirements before participating in clinical rotations, where they gain supervised experience working with patients and health care professionals.

Elnora Hagger, a junior Bachelor of Science in Nursing student of Simmesport, received her flu vaccination during Monday’s clinic. She said having access to the vaccine on campus made completing the requirement more convenient.

“The flu shot on campus made preparing for clinicals easy because I just had to go a small distance to get my shot, and it was during my off time instead of having to make time or an appointment somewhere else,” Hagger said.

Before beginning clinical rotations, students must demonstrate that they can safely and correctly perform required nursing skills. Hagger said clinical rotations give her an opportunity to apply those skills and what she has learned in the classroom to patient care.

“My clinical rotations are very interesting, and I have learned so much so far,” Hagger said. “They give me a chance to apply what I learned in the classroom to real-life scenarios.”

Hagger said the experiences are helping her develop skills, critical thinking and the ability to provide safe and compassionate patient care.

A second flu shot clinic will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Student Union Ballroom during NSU’s annual Benefits Fair. The clinic will again be open to students, faculty and staff. Attendees should bring their insurance card and a completed waiver form.
