NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s Psi Chi Club and Graduate Addiction Studies Club hosted a fund raiser at Flying Heart Brewer to raise funds for Empower Nepali Girls, an organization dedicated to helping marginalized girls and young women in Nepal build brighter futures through education, mentorship and essential support.
“In the wake of the devastating floods in Nepal, the fundraising efforts also aimed to support relief efforts for the more than 500 displaced and orphaned young girls in need of safe and appropriate placement,” said Alondra Torres, who serves on the graduate-level board of Psi Chi.
The collaborative Canvas and Company event offered attendees the opportunity to enjoy a guided painting experience while supporting a cause that reaches far beyond the local community. Flying Heart Brewery contributed 10 percent of food and nonalcoholic beverage sales during the event to NSU Psi Chi. Through ticket sales, additional donations and that contribution, the group raised nearly $1,300 for Empower Nepali Girls.

Dr. Patrice Moulton, a long-time advocate for Empower Nepali Girls, and Dr. Charles King, head of NSU’s Department of Psychology, participated in Canvas & Company to raise money for flood relief in Nepal.
“We were incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from NSU faculty, staff, students and community members,” said Dr. Charles King, head of NSU’s Department of Psychology and Addiction Studies. “We are incredibly proud of what our student-led organization and community accomplished together. This event reminded us how creativity, collaboration, and compassion can come together to make a meaningful difference in others’ lives.”
