Concentrations

The Bachelor of Music degree prepares students for careers or graduate study as professional musicians. Students complete a strong foundation in music theory, musicology, applied study, and ensembles, and must choose one of the following three concentrations.

Concentration in Performance

This concentration is designed for students who wish to pursue careers as performing artists or applied music instructors. Students must demonstrate a high level of technical and artistic performance ability on their instrument or voice. Coursework includes pedagogy, repertoire, and foreign language study. A full, hour-long recital is required at the culmination of the degree.

Concentration in Sacred Music

The Sacred Music concentration prepares students for leadership roles in church and synagogue music ministries. Students develop skills in keyboard performance, conducting, church administration, and hymnody. A one-hour recital—either as performer or conductor—is required, along with a semester-long practicum working with an area church or synagogue.

Concentration in Music Business

This concentration is tailored for students interested in the commercial and administrative sides of the music industry, including marketing, production, and arts management. Coursework may include topics such as studio production, sound mixing, concert promotion, ProTools, and music business law. Students complete a half-recital and a semester-long internship with a music business or nonprofit organization.
