Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a group tour?

No. Your campus visit is all about you. At Northwestern State University, we customize every campus tour to match your academic interests, career goals, and questions about college life. During your visit, you’ll learn about admissions requirements, scholarships, financial aid opportunities, and the application process. You’ll also meet with the academic departments that interest you most and explore residence halls, classrooms, labs, and campus facilities through a guided tour designed around your future at NSU.

Will I be able to see on-campus housing?

Yes. During your campus visit, you’ll have the opportunity to tour the showroom spaces in all three of Northwestern State University’s on-campus residence halls: University Place, University Columns, and Varnado Hall. Explore student housing options, view room layouts and amenities, and learn more about campus living, residence life, and the benefits of living on campus while attending NSU.

How much walking is involved?

Walking is minimal during your NSU campus tour. Visitors only walk short distances when entering and exiting campus buildings. The majority of the tour takes place in an official, air-conditioned Northwestern State University vehicle driven by an NSU Recruiter or Presidential Ambassador. This comfortable guided campus tour allows you to explore academic buildings, residence halls, student life facilities, and key campus landmarks with ease.

How long does the tour last?

The length of your campus tour depends on your personalized visit schedule. Most Northwestern State University campus tours last approximately 90 minutes, giving prospective students and families time to explore campus, learn about admissions, and experience student life. If you plan to meet with multiple academic departments, discuss specific degree programs, or complete an audition, we recommend allowing at least two hours for your visit to ensure you have plenty of time to explore all that NSU has to offer.

Will I receive a school excuse?

Yes. If you visit Northwestern State University during a school day, we will gladly provide a signed school excuse for you to submit to your high school attendance office. An official campus visit is a valuable opportunity for prospective students to explore academic programs, learn about admissions and scholarships, and experience student life firsthand while planning for their college future.

Should I wait until my senior year to visit?

No—there’s no need to wait. Visiting Northwestern State University during your sophomore or junior year of high school is a great way to get a head start on the college search process. An early campus visit allows prospective students to explore academic programs, learn about admissions requirements, discover scholarship opportunities, and experience campus life before senior year. By visiting early, you’ll feel more prepared and confident when it’s time to take the ACT, apply for college, and pursue financial aid and scholarships.

Can I schedule a campus tour by phone?

Yes. To schedule a campus tour or get help choosing the best visit time, call Northwestern State University Admissions at (318) 357-4503. A team member can answer your questions and help you plan your visit.

NSU has given me opportunities I never imagined, from serving as Vic the Demon to growing as a student leader and building lifelong friendships. The support I've received from faculty, staff, and fellow students has made this campus feel like home. My experience has been so impactful that I'm staying at NSU to earn my master's degree. Northwestern State isn't just where I earned my degree, it's where I found my future.
