Rooted in tradition, built for tomorrow—140+ years of shaping minds, careers, and communities with purpose, pride, and progress.
NORTHWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY was founded in 1884 as the Louisiana State Normal School, dedicated to training teachers at a time when public education was a national priority. The campus was established on a historic 100-acre site in Natchitoches, once home to the Academy of the Sacred Heart and tied to the city’s earliest roots. A modest beginning with just 60 students in 1885 quickly gave way to a powerful movement—laying the groundwork for generations of educators and leaders.
AS THE NEED FOR HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS GREW, so did the school. In 1921, it became Louisiana State Normal College, offering four-year degrees. The institution embraced its evolving role in higher education, developing new academic programs and expanding student life. This period marked the beginning of NSU’s transformation from a teaching college into a comprehensive institution.
IN 1944, THE INSTITUTION WAS RENAMED Northwestern State College. This era brought rapid growth in academic offerings and student enrollment. The school expanded far beyond its teaching roots, preparing students for careers across disciplines. By 1970, the college officially achieved university status and adopted its current name: Northwestern State University of Louisiana. It was a moment that signaled a new chapter—one grounded in legacy, yet focused on future impact.
FOR MORE THAN 140 YEARS, NSU has shaped Louisiana and beyond—educating teachers, nurses, business leaders, and innovators. Our graduates lead in classrooms, hospitals, tech firms, and communities. As a regional powerhouse, NSU’s influence spans culture, economy, and progress. Every diploma awarded represents a life changed and a future made brighter.
NSU’S BELOVED THREE COLUMNS, rising from Chaplin’s Lake, are all that remain of the original Bullard mansion once on campus. They’ve stood for generations as a symbol of resilience, vision, and pride. For students, alumni, and faculty, these columns are more than architecture—they’re a promise: rooted in history, reaching toward what’s next.
IN 1949, NSU BECAME THE HOME TO Louisiana’s first baccalaureate program in nursing. Today, the College of Nursing and School of Allied Health is among the best in the nation, offering associate to doctoral-level degrees. With over 12,000 nursing degrees awarded and a 99% NCLEX-RN first-time pass rate, NSU continues to fill vital roles in healthcare across the state and country.
NORTHWESTERN STATE IS BOLDLY LEADING IN INNOVATION. The launch of its School of STEM and AI-focused programming, including a partnership with IBM, reflects a commitment to preparing students for emerging industries.
