Our department is growing, but, as our student numbers continue to increase, many of our department’s needs go unmet by our operating budget. Public funding of secondary education has plummeted in Louisiana over the last decade. For this reason, we are reaching out, asking you to help us foster our growing program through a direct gift. We seek your support in reaching three specific goals:

1. Dr. Julie Kane Endowed Professorship:
   Dr. Kane, currently an Emeritus Professor for our department, has been an immensely influential faculty member and artist for our students, the university, and the world. She served as Louisiana Poet Laureate and has published numerous books of poetry. To honor her, we are raising funds to provide teaching and research support for one faculty member. Target: $80,000
2. Dr. Sara Burroughs English Scholarship Fund:
   Dr. Burroughs, who passed away last spring, was a beloved former faculty member and professor emeritus in our department, affecting in very positive ways the studies and lives of countless students in her long career. To honor her, we are raising funds for three student scholarships. Target: $60,000.
3. English Program Support Fund:
   Our Department often has expenses related to our educational mission, such as sending students and faculty to professional conferences and meetings, bringing in outside speakers and artists to work with our classes and hold public readings, organizing educational events for our students and the campus, and other academic program expenses. Target: $10,000.
