NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University Director of Orchestral Studies and Professor of Bassoon Douglas Bakenhus and Professor Emerita Dennette McDermott will be making a presentation on July 10 at the Annual International Double Reed Society Conference at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
The Title of the presentation is: “Baroque Rhetoric: Articulation and Ornamentation in the Mixed Styles of the Eighteenth Century.”
Bakenhus said Baroque style is rhetorical as if telling a story.
“The performer conveys the affect with a variety of articulations, dynamics and ornaments in relation to the tempo, key and meter,” said Bakenhus. “The time words, such as Allegro and Adagio, are actually mood indicators.”
The presentation will include performances of works by Telemann, Tartini and Jírì Čart (Czart/Zarth) and other examples demonstrating a variety of note lengths, dynamics, unequal emphasis, consonance, dissonance and ornaments to express the affect.
The International Double Reed Society (IDRS) is a worldwide nonprofit organization made up of professional double reed players, students, amateurs, hobbyists, university/college instructors, music teachers, institutions, instrument manufacturers, double reed product retailers, reed makers and enthusiasts.
