NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University students Thomas Perryman and Nickolas Robinson are helping incoming students make the transition to college as Freshman Connectors, serving as mentors and guides during the university’s Freshman Connection orientation program.

Perryman, a graduate of C.E. Byrd High School, and Robinson, a graduate of Southwood High School, are among the student leaders who work with small groups of incoming students, introducing them to campus resources, student involvement opportunities and academic advising while helping them navigate the transition from high school to college.

“I know some people just need that push because some people are introverted like me, and I know it’s kind of hard to push them out of that shell,” Robinson said. “I want to be that light and help bring them out. For my people who are coming down from my hometown, be ready for this big ball of energy coming at you.”

Perryman encouraged prospective students from the Shreveport area to embrace the unique culture at Northwestern State.

“One of the biggest things I can leave with people considering NSU from Shreveport is to really embrace what we have here,” Perryman said. “It’s unique. It’s not like any other college in the state or even out of state. We have a family culture, and embracing that really makes your college experience even better.”

During Freshman Connection, incoming students are placed in groups of approximately 25 to 30 students led by current Northwestern State students who provide guidance and support while sharing information about campus life and university resources. Students also have opportunities to connect with future classmates, become familiar with campus and meet with academic advisors to register for fall classes.

“I hope students leave Freshman Connection feeling excited and confident about the new home they’ve chosen at Northwestern State University,” said Mary-Katherine Maggio, director of First Year Experience and Student Engagement. “My goal is for the program to introduce them to the many opportunities NSU has to offer while helping them build meaningful connections and find a sense of community.”

Northwestern State hosted its third Freshman Connection session June 17. Additional Freshman Connection programs are scheduled for June 25 at the university’s Shreveport campus and July 9 in Natchitoches.
