NATCHITOCHES –The Louisiana Title IV-E Child Welfare Program at Northwestern State University is developing a Child Welfare Simulation Lab to provide hands-on learning experiences for students preparing for careers in child welfare. These simulations will allow students to practice critical skills such as conducting home visits, assessing family environments, engaging with clients and making informed decisions in realistic settings before entering the workforce.
“To create authentic learning environments, we are seeking donations of gently used household furnishings and décor,” said Dr. Jennifer Shaw, Louisiana Title IV-E Training and Research coordinator. “Functional items are welcome, but working condition is not required for many items, as they will primarily serve as props within the simulation space. These help us create realistic home environments where students can gain valuable experience interacting with children and families in a safe, educational setting.
Items may be dropped off or department staff can pick up in Natchitoches, Robeline or Many. To make arrangements for donation, please contact Shaw at shawj@nsula.edu or (318) 357-4650.

“We appreciate your support in preparing the next generation of child welfare professionals,” Shaw said.
The Louisiana Title IV-E Scholar Program prepares social work students for impactful careers in child welfare and is expanding to include students in psychology and child and family studies. The simulation lab will also be utilized with by criminal justice students for investigations courses. In partnership with the Louisiana Child Welfare Training Academy, University Workforce Alliance and Department of Children and Family Services, the program provides hands-on training, real-world experience, research opportunities and financial support.
