NSU faculty discuss Artificial Intelligence in academia, impacts on teaching and learning

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s Faculty AI Club hosted a panel on Artificial Intelligence Nov. 18 to explore how AI is rapidly impacting teaching, research and society as a whole. Faculty from varied disciplines discussed using AI as a tool while emphasizing the importance of foundational learning, critical thinking and human creativity.  The discussion addressed concerns about the moral and ethical implications of relying on large language models for teaching, learning and living and how to develop responsible guardrails for AI use. From left are Dr. Sarah McFarland, professor in the Department of English, Languages, and Cultural Studies; Collier Hyams, professor of art, digital art and multimedia ; Cynthia McDonald, assistant professor in the College of Nursing; Dr. Donald Johnston, associate professor of nursing and coordinator of Interprofessional Research & Instructional Technology; Dr. MaryAnne Candley, head of the Department of Social Work, and moderator Dr. Francene Lemoine, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
