Pictured above: Raylon Bailey of Bossier City was one of dozens of undergraduates who presented during Northwestern State University’s 39thannual Research Day. Bailey’s project, “Heart Monitor Glove Phase 1: Design and Construction,” focused on configuring heart rate detection to correspond with flashing LEDs on a LED rave glove and exporting basic electrocardiogram data wirelessly. Bailey is an undergraduate majoring in biology/microbiology with Dr. Anna Dugas as faculty mentor.

Violet Hawkins, an undergraduate student in the Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University, discussed “The Mind of the Artist: How mental disabilities shaped the art world,” during Research Day April 9. Her research examined how neurodivergence has shaped some of the most brilliant artists and writers, from the Renaissance to today. Sean Callander is faculty mentor.

Jolie Fontenot of Youngsville, a biology/microbiology student in the Louisiana Scholars’ College, shared research, “A Bioinformatic Investigation of Mutations in AR: Identifying Trends in Location and Disease Phenotype” during Northwestern State University’s 39th annual Research Day. Fontenot studies the androgen receptor (AR) gene, a nuclear transcription factor within the family of steroid hormone receptors. Dr. Robert Page is faculty mentor.
