NATCHITOCHES – A faculty recital featuring Stephen Clark on flute and Chialing Hsieh on piano will be presented at Northwestern State University on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. A livestream will be available at nsula.edu/livestream.
Clark is an assistant professor of flute at Northwestern State. Hsieh is an associate professor of collaborative piano at NSU.
The recital will include works by Yan Maresz, Jules Demersseman, C.P.E. Bach, and Eric Ewazen.
Recipient of the 2016 Sir James Galway Rising Star Award and first prize winner of both the 2018 IMKA Music Competition and the Alexander & Buono International Flute Competition, Clark has given more than a thousand performances across all seven continents and made his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 2018. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Royal Northern College of Music and in Switzerland with Sir James Galway.
A frequent guest at major flute festivals worldwide, Clark has appeared in solo recitals for the British Flute Society, National Flute Association of America, Galway Flute Festival Switzerland, Mid-Atlantic Flute Society, Florida Flute Festival, Mid-South Flute Festival, Finnish Flute Festival, Irish Flute Festival as well as being the featured artist at hundreds of flute days and festivals in the U.S., Australia, Europe and Asia. His international solo engagements span 128 countries, and he has performed alongside artists such as Annie Lennox and Andrea Bocelli. As an orchestral musician, he has held Principal Flute positions and appeared as guest principal with leading symphony orchestras in the UK, the U.S., Portugal, Ireland, and Vietnam, working with conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Neeme Järvi, Sir Simon Rattle, Jorma Panula, and Sir Mark Elder.
An avid performer of contemporary music, Hsieh is devoted to promoting new piano solo and chamber works. Hsieh has been a featured pianist on seven CDs for the Centaur, Innova, Enharmonic and Ballpark record labels.
Hsieh has received several grants to promote new American music, including an Artist Enrichment Grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women. A sought-after collaborative pianist, Hsieh has performed with members of the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, Minnesota, and Memphis symphonies. She has performed with the faculty of Julliard, Northwestern, New England Conservatory, University of Cincinnati and Arizona State University. Hsieh has performed recitals in Europe, Asia, and the United States. She performs regularly at conferences for CMS, MTNA, NATS, SCI, North American Saxophone Alliance, National Flute Society, International Clarinet Association, International Viola Congress, World Association for Symphonic Bands & Ensembles and the Southeastern Composers’ League.
