The annual Classic on the Cane, taking place on November 1st, marching band festival is an opportunity for bands of all sizes and abilities to collaborate in Natchitoches at Turpin Stadium to perform in competition or simply for comments only. Ensemble participation is free of charge and available to all bands in the region.
The following awards are given to competing bands:
Spectators are welcome to Turpin Stadium to watch the competition and cheer on all the hardworking students as they perform throughout the day. A variety of concessions and souvenirs are available for purchase. General admission tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for senior citizens, military, and current NSU students. Children under 5 years of age are free.

Horn Line & Drumline Auditions
Auditions for the Spirit of Northwestern can be scheduled individually by emailing band@nsula.edu or during NSU’s fall and spring N-Side View events. Music majors audition through a lesson with studio faculty and should prepare a solo/etude, 12 major scales, and sightreading. Non-music majors only need to perform a solo or etude of choice.
Drumline auditions include placement clinics on April 5 and May 10, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. in the NSU Band Room. Contact Dr. Oliver Molina (molinao@nsula.edu | 318-357-5989) for details.
Scholarships & Fees
Band scholarships and out-of-state fee waivers (min. 2.5 GPA) are available. Members provide black marching shoes, “spirit socks,” and a small summer uniform fee; NSU provides instruments, uniforms, travel, and meals.
