Health Services

Our on-campus Health Services Center provides accessible and affordable care for all NSU students. Staffed by licensed medical professionals, we offer treatment for common illnesses, preventive care, routine exams, immunizations, and more. Students can visit for appointments, walk-in care, or simply ask health-related questions. Because staying healthy means staying on track for success.

Fees

A $96.00 Health Services Fee is charged each semester to support on-campus medical care and wellness services. This fee is automatically included for students enrolled in at least one class on the Natchitoches campus—excluding those with Senior Citizen Exemptions and VA Chapter 31 benefits.

Please note:

  • Students enrolled in online-only classes are not automatically assessed this fee.

  • Health Services and Student Insurance are separate fees.

  • Check your fee sheet to confirm the Health Services Fee is included.

Counseling Services

College life can be exciting, but it also comes with challenges. Our Counseling Center provides free, confidential mental health support to help you manage stress, anxiety, relationships, academics, and more. Whether you need short-term counseling or guidance through a difficult time, our trained counselors are here to help you thrive—personally and academically.

Crisis Services and Referral

Faculty and staff are often the first to recognize when a student may be struggling—whether it’s a change in mood, appearance, or behavior. If you’re ever concerned about a student’s well-being, the Office of Counseling and Career Services is here to help.

We offer confidential consultation services to all members of the Northwestern State University community.

How to Reach Us:
Call 318-357-5621 during office hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) for immediate support.

 After hours or on weekends, contact University Police at 318-357-5431 and they will connect you with a counselor.

Crisis Hotline

The office of Counseling and Career Services provides 24-hour crisis services. If you have situation such as a mental health crisis, rape, suicidal thoughts, feelings etc. that arise after 5:00 call University Police at 357-5431 and alert them to the crisis. They will contact the counselor on call for you.

 

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency such as a suicide attempt or drug overdose dial 911 or if possible, go to the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center emergency room.

NSU Cares

NSU Cares works to make suicide a “never event” at Northwestern State University by fostering a prevention-prepared campus. Guided by national best practices, the program builds a safety net for students and a culture of caring, wellness, and hope. Goals include uniting campus and community mental health services, providing gatekeeper training, offering outreach and education to reduce stigma, and encouraging students to seek help.

University Police

The NSU Police Department is a fully commissioned law enforcement agency dedicated to keeping our campus safe, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Officers patrol regularly, respond to emergencies, and provide crime prevention education. With a visible presence and a commitment to student safety, NSU Police help ensure a secure environment where you can live, learn, and grow.

Purple Alert

Purple Alert is Northwestern State University’s rapid notification system. At its core, Purple Alert is a multi-part communications process for disseminating alerts to NSU students, faculty and staff. Purple Alert are distributed through a company called Firstcall. Registration for Purple Alert will take place directly through a Firstcall supported website.

Campus Parking and Driving Regulations

At Northwestern State University, all vehicles parked on campus must display a valid NSU parking permit, which can be purchased online or through Campus Police. Parking areas are clearly marked and designated for students, faculty/staff, and visitors. To avoid citations, be sure to park in your assigned zone, follow posted signage, and keep your permit visible at all times. Accessible parking is available with proper state-issued tags registered through Campus Police.
