Welcome to the MSW Program

The mission of our Master of Social Work program is to cultivate inclusive, clinically trained evidence-based advanced generalist social work practitioners equipped to meet the growing needs of rural, central, and western Louisiana while maintaining a global perspective and reach. We embrace diversity through anti-racistanti-oppressive, and trauma-informed practices and strive to foster a community of learners committed to enhancing social justice. We empower students to progress from generalist to advanced generalist practice, preparing them to assess, evaluate, and create impactful interventions across all practice levels. We aim to develop social workers who understand the complexities of social inequalities, systemic oppression, and historical, generational and environmental trauma. By integrating cost-effective education with cutting edge approaches, our graduates are equipped to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and programs and to create transformative solutions that enhance the well-being of individuals, families, communities, and organizations.

Northwestern State University’s Master of
Social Work program stood out to me
because of its commitment to training
ethical, culturally responsive practitioners
who are equipped to serve diverse and
often underserved populations. As a
Louisiana native from Baton Rouge, I was
drawn to a program that understands the
unique social and systemic challenges our
communities face and actively works to
prepare social workers to address
them.

I chose NSU because I had an incredible
experience in the BSW social work
program. The professors were supportive
and I enjoyed the learning environment. I
knew staying at NSU for my MSW would
give me that same kind of support and a
solid foundation for the next step in my
education and career.

I chose NSU for the close knit professors
and students. NSU provides multiple
opportunities for undergrad, current
students, and alumni.

NSU is more than just a school to me—it’s
a place that helped me grow as a person.
It gave me opportunities I never imagined
and allowed me to form genuine
connections not just with fellow students,
but also with faculty and staff. The support
and encouragement I received here made
it feel like home.

As a recent graduate of one of NSU’s
online programs, I have experienced
firsthand the commitment to academic
excellence and student success. I chose
NSU again because I trust the quality of
education, the supportive learning
environment, and the continued
investment in preparing professionals who
are equipped to make a meaningful
impact in their respective areas.
