Welcome to Freshman Connection at Northwestern State University

You are about to begin an exciting academic journey that brings many new experiences and challenges. You will want to meet those challenges with success. Becoming a student here will mean many changes in your life, so the Office of First Year Experience and Leadership Development offers programs to help you make the most of your university experience. Freshman Connection is designed to assist you with the transition to university life.

During the program, you will have a chance to meet with university administrators, visit with faculty and staff, and learn more about campus life! You will be introduced to the academic programs and services provided by the University, such as academic advising, and support services. Upon completing the registration process at Freshman Connection, you will be prepared for your first semester in college!

Freshman Connection is one of the most important times of your college career. Take advantage of this opportunity to ask questions about college life…from financial aid to residential life. 2025 Freshman Connection Registration will open on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 9:00 a.m.

To register for Freshman Connection, all admitted students will need to log into their myStatus portal. Through the portal they will be able to access information on their admissions application, financial aid status, housing and Freshman Connection registration. It’s all in one place and customized specifically for students.

Pre-registration for Parent Connection and Kid Konnection is encouraged. Students can pre-register family members for Parent Connection and Kid Konnection through the orientation registration system in their myStatus portal.

During Freshman Connection, you will be placed in a small group with a Connector, who will guide you throughout your orientation program. Your Connector will be a current Northwestern State student who will share valuable information about what you can expect at NSU and will offer support and guidance about the high school to college transition. Here’s what you can expect at Freshman Connection:

  • Small group sessions with your Connectors
  • Opportunities to connect with future classmates
  • An introduction to NSU student services and involvement opportunities
  • Familiarize yourself with campus
  • Meet with an academic advisor who will help you understand your major, schedule of classes, and register for the fall semester

Since most costs are incurred prior to the beginning of Freshman Connection, orientation fees are non-refundable. All new students are responsible for knowing the admissions criteria for Northwestern State University effective for the Fall 2025 semester.

Northwestern State University is located in historic Natchitoches, Louisiana , in the northwestern part of the state. It is approximately 55 miles northwest of Alexandria and 75 miles southeast of Shreveport, Louisiana , Louisiana ‘s third largest city.

  1. Take I-49 to the Natchitoches Exit (138)
  2. Follow Highway 6 into Natchitoches to University Parkway
  3. Enter campus through the Main Gate on Central Avenue
  4. A.A. Fredericks Creative and Performing Arts Center is on the right
Casual clothes and comfortable shoes are appropriate for all activities, although you should plan to bring something suitable for outdoor fun and evening activities. Other necessary items include:

  • Immunization form (if not already sent)
  • Selective Service registration (if not already sent)
  • Official copy of ACT or SAT scores
  • Official copy of college transcript
  • Bed linens, a pillow, towels, toiletry items, alarm clock
  • Other items necessary for an overnight stay in a campus residence hall
  • Casual Clothing (shorts/t-shirts for outdoor fun)
  • Casual clothing for evening social activities

Please make sure that you have submitted all of the following documents:

  • Application for Admission ($20 fee to be sent with application). Apply online.
  • Immunization Form (available from Admissions)
  • Selective Service Registration and/or sworn statement (males 18 and older) (sss.gov)
  • ACT/SAT Scores
  • Official High School Transcript
