Northwestern State University was founded as a Normal School in 1884. Since its inception, Northwestern has prided itself on being a premier provider of teacher education programs. Northwestern’s teacher and professional education programs are accredited based on the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) measures. The School of Education is also recognized by the state of Louisiana as having fully accredited programs.
CAEP Accredited Licensure Programs
All NSU’s initial-licensure level programs underwent review in 2018 and maintained their accreditation. The advanced programs underwent an interview review based on the CAEP measures in the Fall of 2021 semester.
CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) has four annual reporting measures which are used to provide information on program outcome and program impact. The reporting measures for our programs are included on this Accountability page with data that provide supporting evidence of each measure.

As our teacher and professional education programs are accredited through CAEP, we are required to submit an annual report and publicly present data on our programs. We encourage you to look through our data and analyses in each of the sections below.
The following outcome data pertaining to teacher preparation programs in Louisiana is sourced from the Louisiana Board of Regents.
Teacher Preparation Data Dashboards provide a short summary of relevant data about Alternate and Traditional teacher preparation programs at NSULA.
Teacher Preparation Program Reports (Fact Books) contain data from the Teacher Preparation Data Dashboards and other contextual information about state-approved teacher preparation programs in Louisiana. The title of the document was changed from Louisiana Teacher Preparation Fact Book to Louisiana Teacher Preparation Report for 2022.

Each year, the School of Education completes a federal report per the Title II Higher Education Act. The report includes data that is collected annually which details the performance of Teacher Preparation Programs. Below are the most recent years’ Title II reports. Previous years’ Title II Reports can be accessed on NSULA’s Accountability Website under Public Reports Archive → Title II Annual Reports. These reports provide data regarding the types of program requirements, enrollment, the types of teachers prepared, completer (graduate) ability to meet licensing and other state requirements, annual goals, assessment pass rates, and other information regarding the programs.
Additional data provided by ETS demonstrates the performance of test takers on Content Knowledge Exams. These exams must be passed by students in Teacher Preparation Programs before they can graduate. Below is data pertaining to the Content Exams taken by students who have indicated they are attending NSULA, with comparisons to state and national test takers.
The information on the Educator Workforce Reports is compiled, analyzed, and distributed by the Louisiana Department of Education. Public Reports Archive
The Board of Regents, a state agency created by the 1974 Louisiana Constitution, coordinates all public higher education in Louisiana. The Board of Regents provides institutions of higher education with two report annual reports, Teacher Preparation Data Dashboard and Teacher Preparation Fact Books.
The Data Dashboard includes 9 interactive attainment metrics, disaggregated by race/ethnicity, geography, and age range, that can be filtered by system and by institution type to track progress and inform decision making.
The Fact Book includes static information relevant to enrollment demographics, persistence, graduation rates, and more.
Program Impact date is included in these reports.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic school closures, 2020 Teacher Preparation Data Dashboards and Teacher Preparation Fact Books are unavailable. The Louisiana Board of Regents published and released a Teacher Preparation Fact Book with statewide data in April 2021.

Each year the Louisiana Department of Education releases statewide, regional, school system, and school level educator workforce reports. The educator workforce reports were developed to inform school system-level leaders’ and school-level leaders’ educator workforce decisions by providing a rich field of data. The reports contain data relative to educator recruitment, promotion, compensation, and placement. These reports provide Northwestern State University with data to continue to develop and build partnerships with school districts.

Performance Profile Reports
In June 2017, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) established the Teacher Preparation Quality Rating System, as required by federal regulations. The Teacher Preparation Quality Rating System is designed to: provide preparation programs with meaningful information for improvement, identify programs of excellence and programs in need of improvement, and reward programs for meeting Louisiana’s educator workforce needs. Each provider will receive a quality rating score from a Level 1 (Ineffective) to a Level 4 (Highly Effective). BESE will use the information from the Teacher Preparation Quality Rating System to inform continued program approval decisions.
Onsite reviews of programs were scheduled in 2018-2019 or 2019-2020. Northwestern State University’s onsite review, scheduled in March 2020, was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic school closures. An onsite review was conducted in October 2020.
The performance profiles for each teacher preparation provider were available beginning winter 2020-2021. The performance profiles will be updated annually, and the quality rating score will be updated every other year.
