NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s Bachelor of Science in Addiction Studies was named the third most affordable in the country by Bachelor’s Degree Center, a guide to traditional and online bachelor’s degree programs in all disciplines.

NSU’s bachelor’s degree in addiction studies offers an understanding of the human mind addictive behavior, and advances in addiction counseling.  Students have the opportunity to join one of the fastest growing job fields. Addiction Studies graduates typically work as Addiction Counselors.

“The affordable addiction counseling degree at Northwestern State University of Louisiana confers a bachelor’s degree in addiction studies or psychology that provides students with an understanding of how the human mind works. This is a fast-growing field and employers need candidates with the ability to collect and interpret data and understand human behavior. Both addiction studies and psychology are great majors for those who want to work in communications or human resources,” according to the website.

“I agree with and understand the editor’s comment regarding why one would choose a degree in Addiction Studies, as the vast majority of people will encounter the direct or indirect impacts of addictions.  Because of this, anyone and everyone could benefit from this degree,” said Jody Biscoe, coordinator of NSU’s Addiction Studies degree.

Editors focused on accredited, trustworthy institutions in selecting rankings, including tuition cost.

“Those who have a heart of service, experience with addiction or who are interested in some type of counseling career may have likely asked the question, ‘Should I get a degree in substance abuse counseling?’” the editors explained. “The projections for future jobs in substance abuse counseling are strong. Those with a bachelor’s degree in addiction counseling can work in the roles of family and court liaison, crisis intervention specialists, addiction counseling therapists and more.”

The organization ranked the program 12th best online degree program. Editors said the program is ideal for individuals already working in the field or are considering an online substance abuse counseling degree. BDC editors focused on reputable, accredited colleges and universities offering fully online and hybrid programs. Programs are ranked according to cost, graduate salary and student satisfaction.
