NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s College of Business will present its August Virtual Business Seminar beginning at noon on Thursday, Aug. 13.  Business administration (BUAD 3270-International Business) professors will collectively speak on the topic “Exploring International Business Opportunities.”

“We believe that this topic is important for our local businesses to explore different market opportunities to hopefully increase the reach of their services and products,” said Dr. Carmella Parker, associate professor and coordinator of outreach and special projects for the College of Business.

Parker will be one of three speakers that will also include Dr. Weiwen Liao and Michael Fox.

Parker has been licensed to practice law in the State of Louisiana for over 17 years. She teaches a range of classes that includes business law, cyber business law, international business, international comparative management and personal finance.  Parker is responsible for working with the School’s area business stakeholders.  Prior to working at NSU, she worked as field counsel for a Fortune 100 company, an outgrowth from working as an assistant attorney general assigned to the Risk Litigation Division for the Louisiana Department of Justice in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.  There, she vigorously defended various state agencies.  She currently is also contract counsel for a local plaintiff’s law firm that specializes in multi-district litigation.

Parker has a B.S. in Business Administration, a minor in Liberal Arts, and an Equivalent to a Minor in Latin from Louisiana Scholars’ College from NSU.  She earned her Juris Doctor as well as a Certificate of International Studies from Loyola College of Law in New Orleans. She also obtained her Master of Business Administration from the University of New Orleans.

Liao is an assistant professor of management and international business at NSU and the recipient of Karl & Linda Moore Endowed Professorship.  She has a Ph.D. in management and a Master of Economics focusing on industrial foreign trade. Dr. Liao has been teaching international business and operations management at NSU since 2015. She joined NSU after more than a decade of teaching and research at the Business School of Central South University in China, where she was also the vice director of the International Trade and Investment Research Center conducting consulting projects for businesses in various industries. She was also a visiting scholar in management faculty at McGill University in Canada in 2004-2005.

Liao has more than 20 publications in peer-reviewed academic journals, proceedings and books in both the U.S. and China. She is the member of the Academy of Management (AOM), the member of Association of North America Higher Education International (ANAHEI) and serves in the board of ETA MU Chapter of Phi Beta Delta – Honor Society for International Scholars. She serves in several faculty committees at NSU School of Business and was the president-nominated faculty representative in NSU Strategic Plan Team in 2016.

Fox is the founding principal and owner of Fox Management Advisors, LLC (FMA) where his primary responsibilities are overall firm management as well as primary client relations and project management. FMA works with clients both in the United States and abroad on economic development, strategic planning, business planning, technology opportunities and related projects. Fox has also been the GM/CEO of two full-service telecommunications firms offering voice, video, data, wireless and transport services. Fox has taken this real-world management experience and applies this to the benefit of his clients.

Fox is also an adjunct professor at NSU, teaching economics and international business, with recent focus on international business courses that enable him to incorporate his own international business experience.  Fox received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political economy from the University of Wyoming in 1979, graduating summa cum laude. In 1981, he received a Master of Arts in economics, also from the University of Wyoming.  Fox is also a 2009 graduate of Leadership Wyoming.
