As noted above, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parent to the student once the student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age. Parents or guardians may have access to their student’s education record if the student has completed, signed, dated, and submitted the Student Information Release Authorization form. It does not make a difference if the parent/guardian is paying the tuition.
