Frequently Asked Questions

Graduation ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 in Prather Coliseum.

10 a.m. graduates include those who will receive graduate and undergraduate degrees from the Gallaspy Family College of Education and Human Development, undergraduate degrees from the Louisiana Scholars’ College, and graduate and undergraduate degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences with the exception of those receiving degrees in general studies and Engineering Technology.

3 p.m. graduates are those who will receive undergraduate degrees in General Studies and Engineering Technology from the College of Arts and Sciences, undergraduate degrees from the College of Business and Technology, and those receiving graduate and undergraduate degrees from the College of Nursing and School of Allied Health.

Graduation lasts about 2 hours.

Prather Coliseum is located at the corner of Caspari Street and South Jefferson Street on the NSU Campus between Chaplin’s Lake and Turpin Stadium.  Look for purple signage on campus to help guide you to graduation.

A large parking lot stretches around the east and north sides of Prather Coliseum and entrance doors are located at each corner of the building.  Additional parking is available across Caspari Street at Organization Row.  A gated handicapped parking lot is available on the west side of the Coliseum with University Police available to offer assistance.

No.  The Coliseum will fill up quickly, so it is recommended that you arrive at least one hour prior to the ceremony.  Handicapped seating is available on the Coliseum floor.  Our campus hostesses, the Purple Jackets, can assist you.

Dark slacks or khakis are recommended for gentlemen.  A dress or dress suit is appropriate for ladies.

Mortarboards are the “caps” graduates wear.  There are no rules against decorating mortarboards as long as the message is G-rated.

This semester, NSU is proud to host NSU alumna and acclaimed writer, editor and teacher Denise Lewis Patrick, as commencement speaker.

We know you are very proud of your graduate.  However, please be considerate of other graduates and their families.  Airhorns and noisemakers are not allowed so that all graduates’ names can be heard. Flowers for your graduate can be brought from home or purchased at the Coliseum.  You may also consider purchasing a brick to be placed in the Alumni Plaza with your graduate’s name.  Information on the Alumni Plaza is available here:

Some colleges will be holding individual recognition ceremonies and/or receptions on the day of commencement. Each college will send you information about their activities. You should contact your major college for additional information.

Yes.  Both graduation ceremonies will be livestreamed at  Visit the NSU homepage at and the live stream will be available at no charge.

In addition, NSU TV at Northwestern State University will professionally record the ceremony and produce a DVD. Do not miss a single minute of this ceremony that recognizes your academic achievements. Go to to complete the order form and submit your online payment. Provine Photography will take each graduate’s picture at the NSU backdrop after they exit the right side of the stage.  A notice will be mailed to you with information about proofs and purchasing.

Photos will be posted on NSU’s social media platforms.  Follow Northwestern State on Facebook and NSULA on Instagram and Twitter.  Use hashtag #NSUgrad19 to post and view photos from both ceremonies.

Yes.  Staff from the NSU Potpourri will have tables to distribute yearbooks in Prather Coliseum if you would like to pick up a 2019 copy.  They are free to all students.

The President’s, Dean’s and Honor Lists will be released by the Registrar’s Office 4-6 weeks after the semester ends.
