NATCHITOCHES – The fifth and final episode of “Latino Living,” Season 2, a podcast created by Northwestern State University’s Hispanic Student Journalist Association, has been posted on YouTube and Spotify. For this episode, the crew focused on, “La Carrera,” the race.
In Spanish, “carrera” has two meanings, the race and the career. The hosts of Latino Living use that double meaning to illustrate the challenges facing college students who study to graduate and then begin professional careers. “La Carrera” is the race to finish school and find the post-graduation dream job.
Hosts Lia Portillo and Isabel Juarez Rubio discuss the topic while also interviewing two invitados (guests). Guest Sarah Burkhalter, job location and development officer in NSU’s Career Center, talks about steps students can take while still in college to prepare for life after graduation. Burkhalter also provides tips to help graduates destress as they transition from college to career.
Naydu Daza Maya is a multimedia journalist for Shreveport’s KSLA News 12 and former “Latino Living” host, talks with Portillo and Juarez Rubio about transitioning from being an active college student to a professional multimedia journalist. Daza Maya graduated from NSU in December 2023. She accomplished much as a student, including being a founding host of “Latino Living.” Daza Maya, along with the rest of the crew, helped guide the podcast to a national Telly Award and secured a Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Rebirth Grant. Daza Maya remains a consultant and advisor for the “Latino Living” podcast.
As Juarez Rubio takes over hosting duties she said, “The crew of ‘Latino Living,’ is beyond excited about the upcoming season with a new host, new speakers and new topics. Season three of Latino Living will begin fall 2024.”
