What do you do when you know a law is wrong? How far must you take your beliefs? Sophokles’ classic tragedy pits Antigone, who insists on burying her brother, against her uncle and king, Creon, who declares that her brother is a traitor and should be left uncovered and dishonored. NSU’s production, featuring Anne Carson’s rich and incisive translation, moves the intergenerational clash of wills from the ancient world into the present day, inviting us to think about our own notions of family and citizenship.

“Philosophers, theater artists, and audiences have wrestled with Antigone for nearly 3,000 years now,” said Director Dr. Sean Bartley. “At the heart of the play is a conflict between generations that urgently speaks to our campus and present moment. Our production features Scott Burrell, Director of NSU’s Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts, in a powerful performance as Creon, Thebes’ embattled ruler. Our design team, a combination of students and faculty, is utilizing video projection and fusing elements of Ancient Athens and the contemporary world together on stage.”

The cast is Virginia Tudor of Alexandria as Antigone, Phoenix Aura Woods of Lafayette as Ismene,  Logan Dupuy of Prairieville as the chorus, Burrell as Creon, Charlysse Casma and Preston Rasco of Baton Rouge and Kwincy Pierre of Lafayette as choral leaders, Damari Padilla of Lafayette as a guard ,William Kielwasser of West Monroe as Haemon, Jackson Holoubek of Shreveport as Tiresias, J. Cole Becton of Lake Charles as a messenger and Andrea Mouton of Lafayette as Eurydike.
