NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s Department of Social Work hosted a workshop via Webex to open dialogue about race, cultural competence and self-care April 8.  The “Courageous Conversations” workshop provided not only three hours of ethics content for social workers, but also helped participants discuss race, working with diverse populations and how social workers can support Black, Indigenous and people of color.

Program coordinators also discussed how social workers are now charged with advocating for vulnerable populations and how to encourage individuals to practice self-care and how to implement self-care into their lives as social workers.

“We had a great turnout with NSU students from all over the country, faculty, and community members,” said Dr. Susan Campbell, assistant professor of social work. “Most of our participants were online which was made possible through the WebEx technology in the Cane River Room.”

Two workshop presenters were able to attend in in person, NSU graduates Angela D. Moran, MSW, LCSW-BACS, AHCS Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program Coordinator (2009), and Evelyn M. Webb, MSW, LCSW-BACS, AVAHCS Caregiver Support Program Coordinator (2008).  The third presenter was Tamara Richardson, MSW, LCSW-BACS, AVAHCS Post 9/11 Care Management program manager.

Webb said her undergraduate experience at NSU prepared her well for graduate school at Stephen F. Austin State University, MSW, where she graduated in 2009.
