NATCHITOCHES – The Department of Social Work and the Phi Alpha Honor Society at Northwestern State University will host a suicide assessment workshop with an emphasis on veterans from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25. Goals of the workshop are to develop a general understanding of the problem of suicide in the United States, how to identify a veteran who may be at risk for suicide and know what to do if a veteran is identified as at rick, according to Dr. Susan Campbell, assistant professor and social work professional program coordinator. She hopes to raise awareness of the unique challenges faced by veterans in higher education.
The workshop will address the self-directed violence classification system including analysis of scenarios to correctly classify associated behavior. Participants should gain an increased awareness of factors that may play a role in suicide, develop a general understanding of acute and chronic risk stratification and articulate suicide prevention safety planning.
