NATCHITOCHES – The Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band will host the 34th annual Classic on the Cane Marching Contest on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Turpin Stadium. The competition begins at 10 a.m. a.m. The Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band will perform at 6 p.m. The Awards Ceremony is at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for senior citizens, military and children 8 and under. 

NSU Director of Bands Anthony Pursell said 24 high school bands from Louisiana and Texas will take part in one of the region’s top showcases for high school marching bands. 

Schools competing are Jena, Pine Prairie, Ruston, Brusly, Pineville, Tioga, Central, St. Michael’s, Chisum, Natchitoches Central, Many and Patterson. Also competing are West Ouachita, Acadiana. East Ascension, E.D. White, Haughton, East Beauregard, Franklin Parish, Airline, Parkway, Benton, Southside and West Monroe, 

Awards will be presented to the top five overall bands, the top three bands in each classification and the best in class for percussion and auxiliary. There will also be awards for the most entertaining show and most spirited supporters. A most outstanding soloist will also be honored.
