About Us
NDR Organization
Organized like an Army Regiment, the NDR Battalions are numbered consecutively beginning with the class of 1951 as the 1st Battalion, Northwestern Demon Regiment. The class of 2024-2025 is the 75th Battalion of the Northwestern Demon Regiment.
This approach offers ROTC alumni and former cadets the opportunity to reconnect with classmates as well as encourage current cadets to enhance the image and reputation of NSU Army ROTC.

- Alumni Database & Correspondence– The 1st goal of the NDR is informing all Demon Battalion Alumni about the NDR and building a strong database for correspondence. To accomplish this goal the regiment is seeking assistant adjutants to represent each decade of NDR alumni. Also, we have built a display listing every graduate of the NSU ROTC program on a wall within Noe Armory. You can help to complete the display by sending us your information and keeping this information current.
- Military Ball– The 2nd goal of the NDR is to assist the Professor of Military Science with the planning, organization, and cost of the annual Military Ball. This event serves as an annual gathering of NSU Alumni and cadets as well as being the capstone event of the year.
- Military Science Financial Support– The 3rd goal of the NDR is to raise funds to support the cadets of the NSU ROTC program. Our “60 for 60” campaign was a great success! Held in 2009-2010, we raised $60,000 in private funds from our alumni and friends. With a $40,000 match from the state of Louisiana, we created a $100,000 endowed professorship for the Department of Military Science. Interest accrued from the endowment is now used by the Professor of Military Science to support program and Cadet activities, such as:
2024:
This year’s campaign is geared toward the restroom renovation project for our ROTC program at Noe Armory. The estimated cost for the project is $85,000. The NDR will cover 10% of the project cost.
Your donation will assist the Department of Military Science with this most needed upgrade for the comfort and safety of the cadets and staff.
2023:
How do you feed JROTC students visiting campus for NSU ROTC’s Demon Challenge? You call the Northwestern Demon Regiment! In addition to providing food for our tailgates and visits, the Demon Regiment always pitches in for special events. For Demon Challenge, they provided sack lunches for the 15 high school teams that participated in our all-day, 10-event competition. During the team building and recruiting event, we challenged the students in a series of academic, fitness, leadership, and confidence-building tasks intended to inspire excellence and encourage them to grow as citizens and as future leaders.
2022:
NDR purchased a commercial grade ice maker to keep Cadets safe during training. Whether it be for morning PT and land nav on campus or bigger events like Demon Challenge and Field Training Exercises, maintaining a ready supply of ice sheets and immersion ice chests is necessary to ensure Cadet safety.
2021:
Purchased a much-needed trailer to haul gear for field training exercises, Ranger Challenge, tailgating, etc. A true team effort, the University’s Marketing and Branding Office provided the branding wrap.
2020:
Generator for field training exercises and Ranger Challenge
Weights for PT
Gear for ropes course & rappel tower
2019:
Washer & dryer for supply room and Cadet use
Repaired golf cart and purchased tires
Race clocks/timers for PT testing
There’s still plenty to do – thanks for your continued support!
We have pledged ongoing financial support to Cadet activities and look forward to helping them re-equip the Black Knights Drill Team. We also need support for the day-to-day operations of the NDR and to help offset the costs of the annual Military Ball.

HISTORY OF THE NORTHWESTERN DEMON REGIMENT
During the 1950 fall semester, then Northwestern State College (NSC) President H. Lee Prather, with support of the Department of the Army, established the NSC Senior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Two hundred and twenty students participated in military training, and in 1951, the program produced its first commissioned officers.
In 1965, NSC President John S. Kyser signed an agreement with the Department of the Army agreeing to provide the Department of Military Science with the Armory, a secretary, and utilities.
In 2007, President Randall J. Webb officially recognized the Northwestern Demon Regiment (NDR). While the Demon Battalion refers to the current Corps of Cadets, the Demon Regiment is comprised of NSU ROTC alumni. Organized like an Army regiment, the class of 1951 constitutes the Regiment’s 1st Battalion, and the class of 2025 is the 75th Demon Battalion.
Since its inception, the Demon Battalion has commissioned over 1,100 Second Lieutenants into the Army. One hundred and six commissioned as Distinguished Military Graduates, 8 achieved the rank of general officer, 38 have been named to the Demon Regiment Hall of Fame, and 9 have been inducted into NSU’s prestigious Long Purple Line.
The first Professor of Military Science, LTC James W. Bowman, is regarded as the 1st Colonel of the Regiment. LTC Joshua R. Drake, the current Professor of Military Science, holds the honor of serving as the 24th Colonel of the Regiment.
The Demon Regiment supports the Professor of Military Science and the Corps of Cadets under the leadership of the Honorary Colonel of the Regiment, COL(R) William P. Gates, the Chief of Staff, LTC(R) Arthur J. Smalley, and the members of the Executive Council.
NDR MISSION
The Northwestern Demon Regiment is an organization comprised of the alumni of NSU’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Their mission is to enhance the ability of the Department of Military Science to recruit, train, and commission students of high caliber as future Army officers by promoting the exciting NDR heritage and affording every commissioned officer the chance to add their own legacy.
