NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State University Jazz Orchestra will perform on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. The performance is limited to NSU students only. Seating is limited and masks are required in keeping with School of Creative and Performing Arts guidelines. The concert will be livestreamed for the general public at capa.nsula.edu/livestream.
Associate Professor of Trumpet Galindo Rodriguez will conduct the concert which will feature small ensembles to allow social distancing during rehearsals and the concert. John David Floyd is the graduate assistant conductor.
The Jazz Orchestra will perform “Potato Head Blues” by Louis Armstrong featuring Daniel Scott on clarinet, Michael King on trombone and Josh Monaghan and Luis Cervantes on cornet, “Black Bottom Stomp” by Jelly Roll Morton with Scott, Ivan Lorduy and Sadoc S. Calderon on cornet and John D. Floyd and Vanessa Zapeda on trombone, “Cantaloupe Island” by Herbie Hancock and arranged by Matt Niess featuring Michael King, Floyd, William Killen and Zapeda on trombone and NSU Professor of Trombone Dr. Mark Thompson on bass trombone and “Ah Bailar Cha Cha Cha” by Wayne Wallace with Scott on tenor sax, Romulo Ossorio on piano, Covie Latham on congas and Andrew Boyd on timbales.
The orchestra will also perform “Danzon for My Father” and “La Princesa” by Oscar Hernandez featuring Ossorio and Scott on flute, “Not Necessarily” by Francisco Torres featuring Michael King on trombone and Scott on tenor sax and “Afro Cuban Fantasy” by David Torres with Sadoc Silva on trumpet and Latham on timbales.
