NATCHITOCHES – Pianist Angélica María Sánchez, will present a recital on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. The concert is part of the Louisiana Piano Series International. Tickets are $15. Northwestern State University, BPCC@NSU and Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts students are admitted free with a current student I.D. Northwestern State Assistant Professor of Piano Dr. John Price and Associate Professor of Piano Dr. Francis Yang are co-directors of the of the Louisiana Piano Series International. 

The concert will include works by Inés Jijón, Gerardo Guevara, Corsino Durán and Luis Humberto Salgado. 

Sánchez is a Northwestern State alumna from Cuenca, Ecuador. She started her studies at Conservatorio José María Rodríguez Conservatory and later obtained her bachelor’s degree at Universidad de Cuenca, a master’s degree from Northwestern and her doctorate at Universidad Cesar Vallejo (Peru). She is intensely active as a soloist and researcher. As a soloist, Sánchez has performed with the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra and Loja Symphony Orchestra, as well as in several competitions, festivals and recitals nationally and internationally. Sánchez has performed academic and Ecuadorian repertoire in Argentina, Chile, Peru, the United States, Austria, Shanghai, France and Mexico.  

Her recordings of Ecuadorian academic music stand out in the albums “Siluetas de mi Raza” and “Romanzas Ecuatorianas” in which she premieres works by Ecuadorian composers Corsino Durán and Inés Jijón. Her research highlights piano pedagogy published in different journals and congresses in many countries. Sánchez also published a book, “The Piano Technique, Repertoire and Improvisation for Beginners,” published by the Editorial Académica Española. She is currently a Ph.D. student in piano performance at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM), and director of the Conservatorio José María Rodríguez in Cuenca.
