Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (504)

The Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) program at Northwestern State University (NSU) provides certified teachers advanced knowledge in research, pedagogy, and content. The degree offers continued professional development in several concentration areas including: English Education, Reading, Professional Teaching Standards, School Librarian and Transition to Teaching.

Practical and theoretical, the Curriculum and Instruction degree requires 36 hours of graduate work including courses in foundation and application, support, and concentration areas. All of the courses in this degree and concentrations are delivered electronically, Internet or compressed video. Candidates who choose to pursue the Curriculum and Instruction degree must hold a baccalaureate degree in education and meet the requirements of admission to Graduate Studies. Concentrations

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Reading is designed for elementary, middle or secondary teachers who desire to work with students with reading competencies. This program enhances their instructional expertise as well as adding a Reading specialist endorsement to their Louisiana teaching certificate.

Prerequisites for this program include a valid teaching license as well as admission to the graduate school.

Degree requirements for this program and concentration include 12 hours of foundation coursework; 9 hours of support and application coursework; and 15 hours of concentration coursework.

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in School Librarian is designed for elementary, middle or secondary teachers who desire to earn a master’s degree while also obtaining certification as a school librarian. This program enhances their instructional expertise as well as beginning the coursework to add a school librarian endorsement to their Louisiana teaching certificate.

Prerequisites for this program include a valid teaching license as well as admission to the graduate school.

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Transition to Teach is designed for elementary, middle or secondary teachers who have successfully completed Northwestern State University’s alternate certification program (PREP). Candidates have earned their Louisiana licensure and now desire to earn a Masters of Education (M.Ed.) degree. This program enhances their instructional expertise as well as continues their growth as an educator.

Prerequisites for this program include successful completion of the NSU PREP program, a valid teaching license as well as admission to the graduate school.

Degree requirements for this program and concentration include 12 hours of foundation coursework; 9 hours of support and application coursework; and 15 hours of concentration coursework.

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in English Education (504C) is designed for middle or secondary teachers who desire to work with students in the English content classroom. This program enhances their instructional expertise in literacy areas, including critical reading, writing, and speaking.
Prerequisites for this program include a valid teaching license as well as admission to the graduate school.

Degree requirements for this program and concentration include 12 hours of foundation coursework; 9 hours of support and application coursework; and 15 hours of concentration coursework.

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in English as a Second Language – ESL (504J) is designed for elementary, middle, or secondary teachers who desire to work with students who have English as a second language and need language building interventions to become successful learners in an English speaking school environment. This program enhances their instructional expertise in literacy areas, including conversing, reading, and writing.

Prerequisites for this program include a valid teaching license as well as admission to the graduate school.

Degree requirements for this program and concentration include 12 hours of foundation coursework; 9 hours of support and application coursework; and 15 hours of concentration coursework.

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Academic Content is designed for middle and secondary teachers working on dual enrollment credentialing or Advanced Placement. This program enhances their instructional expertise is enhanced along with graduate subject-specific coursework.

Prerequisites for this program include a valid teaching license as well as admission to the graduate school.

Dual Enrollment credentialing requires 18 graduate hours in a content area.

Degree requirements for this program and concentration include 12 hours of foundation coursework; 9 hours of support and application coursework; and 15 hours of concentration coursework.
